Peoples Party wants Pakistan Intelligence agencies to keep out of poll process

Accusing the intelligence agencies of pre-poll rigging, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has demanded an end to the role of all the intelligence agencies, including the Inter-Services Intelligence, in the electoral process.

According to Daily Times, the PPP Election Cell has released a report on alleged pre-poll rigging.

The 45-page report is claimed by the party to be the same, which slain PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto was to submit to the US, the day she was assassinated, the daily said.

The report alleges that Military Intelligence officials in Balochistan are engaged in abducting and threatening the PPP's candidates and are intimidating the voters, adding that this is being allegedly done to ensure victory of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) candidates.

The PPP Election Monitoring Cell alleges in its report that nazims of 45 Punjab districts, including Attock, Chakwal, Lahore and Bahawalpur were using state resources to ensure the victory of their close relatives in the elections.

According to the report, Chaudhry Wajahat, the brother of PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, was intimidating his political rivals with a special force named after him - the Wajahat Force.

The PPP also accused the PML-Q and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) of using police and money to rig the elections.

A "rigging cell" had been formed in the Punjab Governor's House, the party added.
