The dog first joined cerebral palsy sufferer owner Dr Nicola Hendey, of Ruddington, Notts, as a canine partner, helping her in household tasks.
The 45-year-old university researcher then decided to find out if the dog could also complete rigorous guide dog schooling.
Experts thought it to be impossible, but Cavendish turned out to be so intelligent that he completed the yearlong course in just five months.
"Cav is a truly amazing dog. I really don't know what I would do without him. He has helped me cope with everything," The Sun quoted Hendey, as saying.
