Fear of PPP sweeping polls could delay polls in Pakistan

The delay in the holding of elections in Pakistan could be the fear among the political parties supporting Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) could muster a massive victory in the polls through a sympathy wave, following the assassination of its former Chairperson Benazir Bhutto.

Karachi, Jan 1 : The delay in the holding of elections in Pakistan could be the fear among the political parties supporting Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) could muster a massive victory in the polls through a sympathy wave, following the assassination of its former Chairperson Benazir Bhutto.

Following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, it seems difficult for the Pakistan Muslim League-Q to win the election and give constitutional cover to the amendments it has introduced.

The interim Pakistan Government also fears that if PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) win majority seats, they could block recent amendments to the Constitution and restore supremacy of Parliament.

Ruling PML-Q leaders have already suggested to the government that the election should be postponed in the wake of Benazir's assassination.
