Benazir had written to a senior US State Department official that her Pakistan People's Party was not considering the deal as "a good-faith effort towards democracy", according to Washington Post journalist Robert D Novak,
In the letter to the official, Benazir had written: In Pakistan the deal was being seen as a step to preserve embattled Musharraf who is seen as a US President George W Bush's man in Islamabad.
After reaching Karachi on October 18, Benazir requested the Bush Administration's assistance several times in giving her better protection.
The US, however, said that she was worried over nothing and this compelled her to distance herself from the power-sharing arrangement, the daily said.
Benazir was further disenchanted when Musharraf imposed emergency on November 3.
The daily pointed out that she agreed, but got nothing in return.
