Pakistan cops arrest 2 important suspects in Benazir killing

Police in Pakistan arrested two very important alleged terrorists from Rawalpindi on Thursday morning for their alleged involvement in the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Islamabad, Feb 7 : Police in Pakistan arrested two "very important alleged terrorists" from Rawalpindi on Thursday morning for their alleged involvement in the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Benazir was assassinated in Rawalpindi on December 27. A British Scotland Yard team is assisting the Pakistani investigators to trace her killers.

"I can confirm two people have been arrested in connection with the probe into Bhutto's murder and they are being interrogated by the joint investigation team," the Dawn quoted Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier Javed Cheema, as saying.

According to a statement issued by the Pakistani investigation team probing the attack, "two very important alleged terrorists" - Hasnain and Rafaqat - were arrested this morning with the help of Rawalpindi police.

"They are being interrogated," the statement said.

Hasnain and Rafaqat had "tentacles from the tribal region and Baitullah Mehsud," a senior security official said.

"It is a major breakthrough. These two men were involved in the assassination and they are from a militant group which is relatively new," the official added.

It may be recalled that the Scotland Yard team would submit its report to the Pakistani Government on Friday.
