Mom would hopefully be proud of me: Prince Harry

Prince Harry is hoping that he made his mother, Princess Diana, proud by serving in the war-torn region of Afghanistan.

London, Feb 29 : Prince Harry is hoping that he made his mother, Princess Diana, proud by serving in the war-torn region of Afghanistan.

The 23-year-old royal said that he believed the Princess of Wales, who died in a car accident in Paris in August 1997, was looking down on him, and "having a giggle" when things went wrong.

"Hopefully she would be proud. She would be looking down having a giggle about the stupid things that I've been doing, like going left when I should have gone right, finding myself in an awkward position earlier today," The Sun quoted Harry, as saying.

Harry's thoughts were echoed by brother William, who sent him a heart-wrenching letter in the front line, saying: "You're making mum proud."

"William sent me a letter saying how proud he reckons that she would be," Harry said.

"You know, it's one thing that I don't necessarily think about the whole time because I've got the guys to worry about. You worry about yourself, you worry about the blokes you're looking after, you worry about the blokes that you're not even looking after," he added.

The prince also admitted that he knew of the dangers he faced in Afghanistan and even joked he was the Army's "bullet magnet".

However, he added that he was always determined "to do my bit".

"I would never want to put someone else's life in danger when they have to sit next to the bullet magnet. But if I'm wanted, if I'm needed, then I will serve my country as I signed up to do," he said.

Harry, who was totally disappointed when his Iraq tour was scrapped, said that his over-riding feeling when he discovered that he was finally going on an operational tour was one of complete relief.

He said: "It's a job that I've been doing for some time now but I've always been stopped from doing that extra bit which is the main bit that everyone works towards."

"I just want to do the job and get it done and essentially help everybody else that's in the Army - and do my bit," he added.

However, the prince showed his modest side, saying that his service in Afghanistan was nothing compared to those who have lost their lives.

"At the end of the day I'm a human being, I'm just a normal person like these guys," he said.

Harry has been serving on the front line with his British army unit in one of Afghanistan's most lawless and barren provinces of Helmand.

British officials had hoped to keep the 23-year-old's deployment secret until he had safely returned, but they released video of Harry serving in Helmand Province after a leak appeared on the U.S. Web site the Drudge Report.
