Nepals Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Maoist chairman Prachanda and Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal met today to discuss ways to end the 15-day-old Madhesi imbroglio at Koiralas official residence at Baluwatar.
Kathmandu, Feb.27 : Nepal's Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Maoist chairman Prachanda and Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal met today to discuss ways to end the 15-day-old Madhesi imbroglio at Koirala's official residence at Baluwatar.
According to reports, the three leaders have agreed to fulfill the demands raised by agitating Madhesi groups except the one about postponing the election. The demand of one Madhes, one Province has already been rejected by the three leaders.
In recent days, the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) leaders have downplayed the demand for single Madhes province.
UML leader Iswor Pokharel and Maoist leader Ram Bahadur Thapa aka Badal also took part in the meeting, nepalnews reported.
The Prime Minister has directed Home Minister Krishna Sitaula to hold a decisive dialogue with the UDMF.
Sitaula is also holding talks with a government dialogue team, which is led by Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Poudel. The team plans to hold talks on Wednesday.
The UDMF leaders have said they will now take part only in fruitful talks. The UDMF leaders are said to be engaged in internal homework to prepare for next round of talks.
Meanwhile, one person was killed and six others were injured when police opened fired at a group of protesters for violating the curfew orders in Duhabi of Sunsari district on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Biskut Miya of Duhabi. Three of the six injured are said to be in a serious condition.
All efforts of the government to bring the situation under control in the Terai region appear to have failed.
Terai residents are said to be experiencing severe shortages of daily essential items, coupled with a restriction in their movements.
Taking into account the possibility of clashes, local administrations have imposed curfews in more places in Terai and have extended it in places where it was already on.
