Maoist mobilization can lead to inappropriate CA results: Martin

The head of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), Ian Martin, has warned that Maoists could disrupt the appropriate results of the Constituent Assembly.

Kathmandu, Apr 8 : The head of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), Ian Martin, has warned that Maoists could disrupt the appropriate results of the Constituent Assembly.

"UNMIN is not an armed force that can stop anybody and we have no authority to intervene. But if that were to happen on a large scale, then the result of the election would not be supported by the international community or others," Martin said.

"As per the peace agreement, the Nepal Army (NA) and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) could not be on leave during elections, UNMIN had already informed PLA fighters, who had been on leave, to return to their respective cantonments immediately.

He also urged major political parties to create conducive environment for the election. "The voters should be assured they can cast their votes fearlessly for the party they like," he added.

Martin said, "All the signatories to the Comprehensive Peace Accord should reach an agreement on NA mobilization if the situation so demands."

To exercise restraints, Martin has taken the recent call positively by Maoist chairman Prachanda and YCL chairman Ganeshman Pun to their respective cadres.

He said, "Reports to the UN body suggest that cadres of the CPN (Maoist) are behind most of the violence."

"We have said in this report, as in previous reports, that the largest number of incidents of violence reported to us involved the YCL and Maoist cadres," he added.
