Following reports that the new Pakistan government was mulling over enacting a new legislation to commute all death sentences into life imprisonment, a three-member bench of the countrys Supreme Court has reportedly asked the Attorney General whether such a legislation was under consideration.
Islamabad, Apr 29 : Following reports that the new Pakistan government was mulling over enacting a new legislation to commute all death sentences into life imprisonment, a three-member bench of the country's Supreme Court has reportedly asked the Attorney General whether such a legislation was under consideration.
Advocates Sardar Muhammad Siddique and Muhammad Zaman Bhatti appeared before the bench, comprised of Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, Justice Ejaz-ul-Hassan and Justice Ch Ijaz Yousaf.
A written directive was issued to Attorney General Malik Muhammad Qayyum, who told the court that he was not aware of any such legislation.
In case any such legislation comes forth, the biggest benefit from Indian perspective could be for Indian national Sarabjit Singh, who is facing death sentence for his role in bomb blasts in Lahore in 1990.
