Tamil daily licenses renewal by Malaysian govt welcomed

The Malaysian governments decision to renew the license to publish Tamil daily Makkal Osai has been hailed by the Indian community, most of whom are Tamils, in Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur, Apr 26 : The Malaysian government's decision to renew the license to publish Tamil daily Makkal Osai has been hailed by the Indian community, most of whom are Tamils, in Malaysia.

Earlier, on April 16, the country's Home Ministry had rejected the daily's application for a new permit.

Prominent lawyer Karpal Singh welcomed the Malaysian Government's decision, saying that freedom of the press as fundamental to the Rule of Law. He said the Government, in its efforts to reinvent itself through liberal policies after the March 8 general election, should give the highest premium to freedom of the press.

"Freedom of the press, in the final analysis, reflects political stability which is crucial to foreign investment. The renewal has also saved more than 100 employees, who otherwise would have become unemployed," the staronline.com quoted Karpal Singh as saying in a statement.
