London, Apr 17 : A 70-year-old pensioner was stunned when an X-ray showed he has had a broken leg for half a century.

Roy Calloway smashed his right limb in several places in a motorbike accident in 1958.

He spent six months in traction and two years on crutches as surgeons tried to reset the fractures

Afterwards he was still plagued by pain but accepted it as a side effect of the treatment.

He even went back to work sweeping floors in a steel plant, leaning on a walking stick and a brush.

But in later life the pain grew so bad he went to his GP - and was amazed to be told his femur, tibia and fibula bones had never fused back together properly.

"I've been living in agony for half a century. The pain had been intolerable for so long it was part of my life. It came as a complete shock when I saw the leg was still broken - but it explains a lot," The Sun quoted him, as saying.
