British supermarket giant Tesco is hoping to widen higher education and bring in a new kind of educational qualification - by offering degrees in the art of shelf-stacking.

London, April 14 : British supermarket giant Tesco is hoping to widen higher education and bring in a new kind of "educational qualification" - by offering degrees in the art of 'shelf-stacking.'

The supermarket chain is to offer its own qualification in retail management, including the arts of display design, special offers and efficient shelf stacking.

The Tesco FD(A) (Foundation Degree (Arts)) is to be launched this month and will be offered to other retailers who can adapt it.

The course will be run in conjunction with universities in Manchester and London.

It is hoped that the two-year degree will become the standard national qualification for supermarket managers in due course.

The course will be mostly taught at work and online, although it includes some days at university.

"This looks like another Mickey Mouse degree. It isn't very intellectually taxing for degree level. It is further dumbing down of university education," The Sun quoted Nick Seaton, from the Campaign for Real Education, as saying.
