Musharraf cant be re-elected by the present assemblies: Justice Wajihuddin

The present assemblies of Pakistan which have been elected for five years cannot re-elect President Pervez Musharraf for a second term, Justice (Retd) Wajihuddin Ahmed, the candidate of the legal fraternity for the upcoming presidential election, has said.

Islamabad, Sep 27 : The present assemblies of Pakistan which have been elected for five years cannot re-elect President Pervez Musharraf for a second term, Justice (Retd) Wajihuddin Ahmed, the candidate of the legal fraternity for the upcoming presidential election, has said.

If Musharraf gets elected on the votes of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid-e-Azam (PML-Q), it would kick-start the next phase of their movement, Justice Wajihuddin said.

"We will win this battle with the help of the whole nation," he told reporters.

After refusing to take oath under Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) on January 26, 2000, he came to the Supreme Court building for the first time only at request of the lawyers' community to contest for the office of the president, The News quoted Justice Wajihuddin, as saying.

Although the case of dual office of the president and his candidature for the office of the president for the second term is pending in court, it does not mean that the petitioners would only confine themselves to courts and wait for its decision, he said.

The legal fraternity would hold a peaceful protest on September 29 to register our voice against Musharraf's bid to get re-elected, Wajihuddin added.

President Supreme Court Bar Association Munir A Malik, Justice (Retd) Tariq Mahmood, Ali Ahmed Kurd and Hamid Khan advocate were also present during this occasion.

Hamid Khan paid rich tributes to Justice Wajihuddin for agreeing to contest the election against Musharraf.

It is the second biggest and important event in the country's history, Khan added.

The lawyers' community is determined to continue movement against the military dictatorship, he said.
