NC, NC (D) are reunited after five years

Five years after the split, the Nepali Congress and the breakaway Nepali Congress-Democratic (NC-D) became a single party on Tuesday.

Kathmandu, Sept 25 : Five years after the split, the Nepali Congress and the breakaway Nepali Congress-Democratic (NC-D) became a single party on Tuesday.

Prime Minister and NC President Girija Prasad Koirala, and NC (D) President Sher Bahadur Deuba jointly made the announcement.

Koirala and Deuba exchanged the note of unification at a joint meeting of the Mahasamiti of the two parties held at Congress party office in Sanepa, Lalitpur.

Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, the only surviving founding member of the NC, was also present at the unification ceremony.

Addressing the unification ceremony, Koirala urged the party leaders and the activists to work for building 'new Nepal' and holding Constituent Assembly elections on time.

"This is a historic moment," proclaimed Koirala, who will retain the presidency of the unified Congress party.

Deuba said the unification was meant to address the spirit and sentiments of the party workers as well as the national political scenario.

He urged the party workers to give up past bitterness.

The unification came after four months of deliberations between the taskforces of the two parties.
