Nepal political crisis: Koirala begins consultations with Maoists

Nepalese Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala is holding high-level discussions with top leaders of the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) and other leaders of the ruling seven-party alliance in the wake of the suspension of the Constituent Assembly polls.

Kathmandu, Oct 7 : Nepalese Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala is holding high-level discussions with top leaders of the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) and other leaders of the ruling seven-party alliance in the wake of the suspension of the Constituent Assembly polls.

With political crisis deepening in the Himalayan nation, Koirala met Maoists Chairman Prachanda on Sunday morning and reportedly deliberated on ways to maintain the unity of the coalition.

They also agreed to find a consensus before October 11 when the special session of the interim Parliament convenes.

The Maoists have called for a special session of the interim Parliament to take a decision on their demands for republic and the elections to be held on the basis of proportional representation.

The Maoists are holding intense discussions with the parties to forge a consensus for a proclamation of the Himalayan country a republic through the interim parliament.

Prachanda and Koirala also met CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal. Their meeting focused on the special session of the interim parliament.

Besides, seven parties are holding internal meetings to frame their strategies in the new political situation.

Maoist central secretariat meeting that concluded on Saturday has decided to organise mass rallies across Nepal on October 11 to pressurise other parties for declaring Nepal a republic through interim parliament.

The Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting of the Nepali Congress is scheduled to be held tomorrow.

The Nepal Election Commission on Friday suspended the November 22 Constituent Assembly polls without announcing new dates for the elections.

The international community, which has been in favour of timely Constituent Assembly polls, has expressed disappointment at the suspension of polls.
