Pakistans Attorney General Malik Qayyum has said that the Supreme Court can declare the presidential election null and void in case the pledge made by President Pervez Musharraf regarding doffing his uniform is not fulfilled.
Islamabad, Oct 4 : Pakistan's Attorney General Malik Qayyum has said that the Supreme Court can declare the presidential election null and void in case the pledge made by President Pervez Musharraf regarding doffing his uniform is not fulfilled.
Qayyum said that the presidential election is not far off and hoped that the Supreme Court would not interfere in it.
"Musharraf gave an undertaking in the Supreme Court regarding doffing his uniform and in case the pledge is not fulfilled, the SC can declare the presidential elections null and void," he said.
Qayyum said that he would appear before the Supreme Court in a case concerning the issue of notice in the hearing of the petition challenging nomination papers of Musharraf.
Earlier, Musharraf's counsel Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada had said that the General would doff his uniform after his re-election as President for another term, the Daily Times reported.
In a statement to the Supreme Court, Pirzada said that if Musharraf wins the election, he would be sworn in for a new term as a civilian President.
"If elected for a second term as president, General Pervez Musharraf shall relinquish charge of office of Chief of Army Staff soon after election and before taking oath of office as President," Pirzada told the apex court.
