Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the news of the proposed National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) is a serious joke with the Pakistanis and will embarrass the country internationally.
Islamabad, Oct 4 : Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the news of the proposed National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) is a serious joke with the Pakistanis and will embarrass the country internationally.
"Naming a deal of personal interest a national reconciliation is an insult to the nation," Sharif said.
He rejected the NRO, and termed it against the norms of justice.
Sharif said that the nation would reject the actions that were being executed in personal interests.
Sharif said that there should be a national reconciliation for the supremacy of the Constitution and democratic institutions.
He said that in the 'Charter of Democracy', signed by leaders of the PML-N and the Pakistan People's Party, it was written that a transparent and foolproof system of accountability would be introduced in the country under an independent judiciary.
Sharifs also said that there were no cases of corruption against him or his family, and added that he was against amnesty for selected people.
He demanded that the proposed amnesty for politicians should also benefit people who are in prisons for petty crimes.
Earlier, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shahbaz Sharif had rejected the Pakistan Government's proposed ordinance to grant amnesty to untried and non-convicted politicians.
Shahbaz said that he and his brother former premier Nawaz Sharif didn't need any amnesty from the Musharraf regime, the Daily Times reported.
The National Reconciliation Ordinance would grant amnesty to all politicians, bankers and bureaucrats from all charges relating to misdemeanours, misconduct and misuse of power between 1985 and 2007.
The ordinance would apply to all those against whom such allegations are outstanding in courts of law and who have not been convicted.
