Nepali Congress decides to go against Maoists motion in parliament

The Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Nepali Congress (NC), has decided to go against the CPN-Maoists proposal for announcement of republic from the special session of the parliament and adopting proportional voting system for the Constituent Assembly polls.

Kathmandu, Oct.10 : The Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Nepali Congress (NC), has decided to go against the CPN-Maoist's proposal for announcement of republic from the special session of the parliament and adopting proportional voting system for the Constituent Assembly polls.

The three-day CWC meeting, which ended on Wednesday, decided to vote against the two motions the Maoists are bringing in the special session, one for announcement of republic and another for adopting fully proportional voting system.

A majority of the CWC members opposed the Maoist demands, saying that they would challenge the interim Constitution and stressed that the election process should resume at the earliest.

Expressing disappointment over the Maoist party's failure to stop abductions, extortion and return the seized properties as per the agreement in the peace accord signed earlier this year, the CWC meeting called upon the Maoist leadership to remain committed to their promise of holding the Constituent Assembly election and to also fully abide by the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA) in letter and spirit.

CWC members also urged the government to immediately set a new date for the Constituent Assembly polls.

They said that the Government needs to be more sensitive towards the rapidly deteriorating law and order situation in the country.

Meanwhile, the first meeting of the NC parliamentary party since its unification will take place at Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala's Baluwatar residence this evening.
