The Russian Federal Space Agency, Roskosmos, has gifted US astronaut Peggy Whitson a kamcha, a traditional Kazakh riding whip, a day before her blast off to the International Space Station (ISS) from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
London, Oct 10 : The Russian Federal Space Agency, Roskosmos, has gifted US astronaut Peggy Whitson a 'kamcha', a traditional Kazakh riding whip, a day before her blast off to the International Space Station (ISS) from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
Sergei Semchenko, a Roskosmos official said, the gift was to help Whitson keep her male crew in line.
The 47-year-old biochemist is scheduled to take off from Baikonur cosmodrome on Wednesday with Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Malaysia's first astronaut, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor.
Whitson will be taking charge of the ISS, and in the process, create history for being the first woman to command the space station.
This will be her second trip to the ISS, though.
According to a BBC report, Whitson jokingly accepted the whip, and said, she hoped she would not have to use it, but would take it just in case.
