New York, Oct 1 : External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee today met Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Nyan Win on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The meeting lasted for 20-minutes and was "free, frank and straightforward." Accompanied by Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon and India's Permanent Ambassador in UN, Nirupam Sen, Mukherjee expressed his concern over the situation in Yangon to Win.
In Yangon, pro-democracy movement led by monks is being violently repressed by the military junta and at least nine people have died in the crackdown.
Mukherjee reportedly said to Win that India wants to see a "stable and prosperous Myanmar". However, the mood after the brief meeting was not encouraging as Indian officials went into a huddle.
Later, Mukherjee met UN General Secretary, Ban Ki-moon, and apprised him of the regional issues. The meeting with Ki-moon lasted for about 20 minutes.
