North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) Chief Minister Akram Durrani is expected to recommend provincial Governor Ali Muhammad Jan Orakzai to dissolve the assembly on Tuesday in a bid to resist President General Pervez Musharrafs re-election plan.
Peshawar, Oct 1 : North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) Chief Minister Akram Durrani is expected to recommend provincial Governor Ali Muhammad Jan Orakzai to dissolve the assembly on Tuesday in a bid to resist President General Pervez Musharraf's re-election plan.
Durrani, who heads the Muttahida-Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) Government in the province, has already submitted his resignation to MMA provincial president Senator Gul Naseeb Khan.
All of his Cabinet members have also handed over their resignations to the party leadership, which would be rendered to Speaker Bakht Jehan on October 2, even as the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) has termed the proposed step an insult to the public vote, The News reported.
"The Chief Minister would ask the Governor to dissolve the assembly, and it is hoped he would honour the point of view of the majority," a senior government functionary was quoted as saying.
A total of 82 MPAs, including 68 of the ruling MMA, have submitted their resignations to the party leadership. Apart from the ruling alliance, the Awami National Party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and some independent legislators will also resign to protest the candidature of Musharraf for the top slot.
However, dissident MMA lawmaker and former deputy speaker Ikramullah Shahid may support the no-trust move against the provincial government, along with another legislator elected on a ticket of the religious alliance, Pir Mohammad.
Meanwhile, the PML(Q) and PPP Sherpao today filed a writ petition in Peshawar High Court to prevent Durrani from dissolution of the provincial assembly.
PML(Q) MPA Nighat Orakzai, Saeed Khan, PPP-Sherpao's Murid Kazim and leader of the opposition in NWFP Assembly Shahzad Gustasap have made the chief minister, governor, provincial chief secretary and assembly secretary as party in the petition.
They requested the court to stop the Chief Minister sending advice to the Governor to dissolve the assembly.
The presidential election is due for October 6. Besides Musharraf, Justice (retired) Wajeehuddin Ahmed-- as lawyers' candidate-- and Makhdoom Amin Fahim-as Pakistan People's Party (PPP) candidate- will contest the poll.
