The Pakistan Supreme Court has asked the top administration of Islamabad to appear before it in connection with the Saturdays violence that injured over 50 people.
Islamabad, Oct 1 : The Pakistan Supreme Court has asked the top administration of Islamabad to appear before it in connection with the Saturday's violence that injured over 50 people.
Taking a suo moto cognisance into the use of force by police on lawyers, journalist and other civil society representatives who were participating in a "Black Day" demonstration to protest Supreme Court verdict permitting President General Pervez Musharraf to contest the October 6 presidential elections in uniform, the apex court has issued these directives.
"Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has issued notices to the interior secretary, Punjab additional advocate general, IG police, chief commissioner, deputy commissioner and senior superintendent of police, Islamabad, to appear before court in connection with police violence against lawyers, the media and representatives of human rights (HR) and civil society organisations," said a press release issued by SC Registrar Chaudhry Faqir Hussain.
The apex court has also asked the officials to produce the September 29 security plan for Islamabad and copies of the First Information Reports (FIR) registered against lawyers and journalists on Saturday and Sunday.
The court had also directed the private TV channels of the country to produce the recordings of the incidents that were telecasted live.
The Information Ministry will have to inform lawyers, journalists and representatives of civil society and human rights organisations, and all others who had been involved in the incidents, to appear before the court, the Daily Times reported.
The court has also directed the Polyclinic and the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences chiefs to appear before it.
According to reports, at least 53 people, including lawyers and journalists, were injured when police fired tear gas, baton charged and threw stones at protesting lawyers and human rights activists on Saturday.
