Kabul, Nov 3: German Chancellor Angela Merkel today reached Kabul and met Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai.
Merkel's visit to Kabul, which was kept secret for security reasons, comes in the wake of German Parliament giving a go-ahead for her plan to extend military engagement in Afghanistan in spite of a strong public opinion opposition.
Close to 3,000 German troops are deployed there, and a total of 25 soldiers have been killed in the last five years, since their deployment. Meanwhile, the US military said that Afghan security forces have killed a top-ranking insurgent commander allied to the Taliban.
The commander, Mawlawi Abdul Manan, was killed with other insurgents trying to cross into Afghanistan from Pakistan, the BBC quoted US military spokesman Major Chris Belcher, as saying.
The Taliban have confirmed Manan's death.
Abdul Manan was a top commander in the eastern Afghan provinces of Khost, Paktia and Paktika.
