Oz flag-draped pigs head found at controversial Islamic school site

The heads of two pigs were found on stakes draped with an Australian flag at the site of a proposed Islamic school in Sydney early this morning.

Sydney, Nov 28 : The heads of two pigs were found on stakes draped with an Australian flag at the site of a proposed Islamic school in Sydney early this morning.

Police have sent the remains of the animal for forensic examination.

Though the police said they were unaware of any messages left by the perpetrators, the proposed construction of an Islamic school had earlier evoked strong protests from residents in the area.

Earlier this month, close to 1000 people participated in a meeting against the construction of the proposed school of the Quranic Society.

The society plans to build a primary and high school for 1200 students.

Commenting on Wednesday's incident, the society's spokesman Jeremy Bingham, slammed the act as 'low' and 'hurtful'.

"It's not representative of anybody, of any Australian - there's nothing more un-Australian than exhibiting that kind of prejudice,'' the Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.

NSW Community Relations Commission Chairman Stepan Kerkyasharian also termed the incident as 'outrageous'.

"Every Australian Muslim would be offended by such a display, especially one involving the Australian flag," Kerkyasharian added.

In 2004, a severed pigs head had been similarly impaled in front of a Muslim prayer centre in Annangrove, in the northwest part of the city.
