General Pervez Musharraf stepped down from the Army Chief post handing over the command to General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, who took charge as 14th Chief of Pakistan Army.
Rawalpindi, Nov 28 : General Pervez Musharraf stepped down from the Army Chief post handing over the command to General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, who took charge as 14th Chief of Pakistan Army.
Musharraf addressed the change of command ceremony held in this garrison town at Hockey Stadium next to the military General Headquarters.
The caretaker Prime Minister Muhammadmian Soomro attended the ceremony along with services chiefs, members of the caretaker cabinet and high military and civil officials.
"I am leaving the army in a best shape and knows General Kayani for last 20 years who is an excellent soldier and Army officer," said Musharraf.
He thanked General Ashfaq Kayani and other officers and jawans of the armed forces for their assistance and cooperation.
Musharraf handed over the ceremonial command baton to his successor Genera; Ashfaq Kayani saying that he is handing over the Army to a person who is an excellent soldier.
Kayani is recipient of the Hilal-i-Imtiaz award or the "Crescent of Excellence," Pakistan's second highest civilian award, and was the chief of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) from 2004 and played a crucial role in the talks between former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Musharraf.
He earned the President's confidence after a spate of assassination bid on the latter, and he is reported to have investigated those assassinations, and detained many terrorists.
Kayani is reported as a "smart, tough, talented commander, who is and pro-Western".
The son of an Army NCO, he climbed rapidly through military ranks after he joined Pakistan Army in 1970. He was also Deputy Military Secretary to Bhutto, when she became Prime Minister for the first time in 1988.
He was promoted to Lieutenant General rank in 2003 and was made Corps Commander of the powerful X Corps at Rawalpindi.
