University of Health Sciences Vice Chancellor Professor and psychiatrist Malik Hussain Mubashar said youngsters making such prank calls has become a routine as they usually feel lonely and need someone to socialise with

"As the joint family system is fading away from our society, it is getting harder for the youth to socialise," the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.

Rescue 15 officials said that some girls call on the help line regularly, and make up stories about some crime incidents.

"The pranksters, later, change the subject to getting married and usually hold fake telephonic marriages with the operators. One of the girls pretends to be the bride and her friend plays the priest," they said.

Mubashar said such incidents are a usual phenomenon in developed countries like the US and the UK as well, and not restricted to Pakistan.

Superintendent of Police (mobiles) Capt (retired) Suhail Chaudhry said the numbers of top 10 frequent callers had been identified and cases were registered against them under Section 29 of the Telegraph Act.

"Investigation Wing officials will hold an inquiry into the matter and trace the other pranksters," he said.
