Kathmandu, May 4 : Former Nepal army chief and royal advisor Satchit SJB Rana died at a hosptal here on Friday morning. He was 74 and was suffering from cancer.
Rana was declared dead at 5.45 a.m. by doctors at the Birendra Army Hospital in Chhauni. He is survived by three daughters and one son.
Rana was the Chief of Army Staff of then Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) during the first people's movement of 1990 when democracy was restored through the abolishment of Panchayati regime. The 1990 movement had established the constitutional monarchy in the country.
Rana was a controversial figure during the royal regime and was known as a key advisor to King Gyanendra.
A strong supporter of active monarchy, Rana was one of the few defenders of King Gyanendra's regime post February 1, 2005. He was also interrogated by Rayamajhi Commission for his role in the repression of People's Movement II last year.
