Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, lead counsel of suspended Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, has said he would file a defamation suit against President General Pervez Musharraf for attributing the Karachi violence to them.
Islamabad, May 17 : Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, lead counsel of suspended Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, has said he would file a defamation suit against President General Pervez Musharraf for "attributing" the Karachi violence to them.
Ahsan said holding him and the suspended CJP responsible for the violence amounted to slander, thus he would sue Musharraf for damages for the sum of two billion rupees in a court of law.
"He has attributed the violence to me and the CJP. This amounts to defamation and slander. The MQM government should admit its fault and mal-intent. It should declare now that it will desist from any counter rally or resistance when the CJP is again invited to Karachi by the bar association," the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.
He said that the amount be paid from Musharraf's personal assets, adding that he would donate it to the people of Karachi.
Ahsan countered the allegation, saying the violence was a direct result of the MQM's insistence on staging a rally in opposition to the CJP's visit to Karachi on the same day.
"Being an integral part of the government, the MQM rally was sponsored by the Sindh Government. What right did they have to prevent any Pakistani from visiting Karachi, what to say of the CJP?" he asked.
Ahsan went on to say that there was no violence when he and Iftikhar Chaudhry travelled from Peshawar to Lahore, but it all started when they reached Karachi.
He further alleged the Sindh Government of making attempt of abducting the suspended Chief Justice, saying a hostile MQM rally arrived at the Karachi airport and blocked their exit.
"We remained incommunicado at the airport for 10 hours until I and other lawyers were deported from Karachi," Ahsan added.
