India doubles petrol supply to Nepal

Relaxing certain restrictions on petrol supply to Nepal, India has doubled its fuel supply.

Kathmandu, May 15 : Relaxing certain restrictions on petrol supply to Nepal, India has doubled its fuel supply.

The state-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) on Monday released 400,000 kiloliters of petrol, which is still less than the normal import to Nepal.

"The Indian supplier today released 400,000 kiloliters of petrol, which is two-fold the quantity it was issuing for over the past 10 days," Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) Deputy General Manager Umesh Dahal was quoted as saying by Kantipur online.

India has controlled the supply of other petroleum products.

IOC continues to cut supply of diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel by 40 percent, officials said.

Nepal has been hit by fuel scarcity, especially petrol, after the IOC on May 7 slashed supplies from Raxaul, the largest import point in Nepal, by 40 percent, on the grounds of non-payment of monthly import bills.

On Saturday, Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala appealed to India to lift its restrictions on petroleum supplies to his country.

NOC officials said the IOC has not indicated a resumption of normal supplies so far.

"It (IOC) has said that (some) relaxation on petrol supply has been done for the time being only, and NOC will receive normal supplies once it clears past dues," the daily quoted NOC Spokesperson Iccha Bikram Thapa as saying.

The state-owned oil corporation owes over five billion rupees to the IOC. The NOC also failed to release the payment of Rs 240 million for May, which led IOC in cutting fuel supply by 40 percent.

NOC Executive Director Bishwa Nath Goyal said the corporation has sought financial support from the government.

According to Nepal Commerce and Industries Ministry sources, a proposal to either raise prices of fuel or provide Rs 240 million to NOC awaits Cabinet approval. A Cabinet decision on this is expected on Wednesday.

NOC reportedly has stock enough for just two days. Panic over the sparse availability of fuel continues in the market.
