Melbourne, July 9 : Erection drugs may give a man's performance in bed a boost, but they don't have the same effect on their self-esteem or their relationships.

A survey of 650 Aussie men found that while those with erectile problems have poorer esteem, a weaker sense of masculinity and lower personal satisfaction.

Of these 400 men had erectile dysfunction (ED), including half who had tried drug treatment, and another 250 men with normal sexual function.

However, there was no difference in the levels of the above for men who were taking erection drugs like Viagra.

Lead researcher and psychologist Hayley Matic said that the survey showed that pills like these are not enough to give self-esteem a boost.

The findings contradict earlier surveys that show that Viagra and other drugs give men's esteem a boost.

"This just goes to show that medications are not a magic pill to improve the sex lives of men," News.com.au quoted Dr Matic, as saying.

"Overall, wellbeing was not improved in the men who had used medical interventions for their ED."

"In fact there was no difference in the reports, regardless of whether they were on drugs," Dr Matic added.

A spokesman for Viagra manufacturer Pfizer, maintained that the drug "improved the sex lives of more than 30 million men worldwide".

The findings will be published in the International Journal of Impotence Research.
