Poll reveals Americans growing support for Iraq invasion

A recent poll conducted by the New York Times in collaboration with the CBS News has found that the support among Americans for initial invasion of Iraq has increased.

Washington, July 24 : A recent poll conducted by the New York Times in collaboration with the CBS News has found that the support among Americans for initial invasion of Iraq has increased.

Among those polled 42 percent said taking military action in Iraq was the right thing to do, while 51 percent said US should have stayed out of Iraq.

In May, support for the invasion was at an all-time low when only 35 percent of Americans were in favour of the invasion, while 61 per cent opposed it.

According to The New York Times, two-thirds of those polled said that the US should either reduce its forces in Iraq or remove them altogether,

The latest poll reveals that two-third of Americans still say that the war is going badly.

"At the time that we went into Iraq, we had just come out of 9/11. The nation was in shock, frightened," Sally Fisher of Garden City, Mich, said in a follow-up interview after the poll was conducted. "Looking back, I still think we should have gone in. Should we have stayed as long as we did? No."

When asked specifically about their opinions of how the Democrats and Republicans in Congress are handling the war, disapproval ratings are similar - 65 percent disapprove of the Republicans' handling of Iraq and 59 percent disapprove of the Democrats'.

889 adults participated in the nation-wide telephone poll.
