London, July 2 : Scientists attached with the University College of London are to simulate tsunamis in a giant tank to study their awesome power.
A generator will artificially create waves similar to those naturally set off by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The waves will then pass down a 45ft flume while their strength and potential destructive effects are measured, reports The Mirror.
"The gap in our knowledge is what happens when a tsunami approaches shore and runs inland. This cannot be found out by using mathematical models because of complex interactions involving beaches, coastal defences and buildings. The wave has to be accurately generated in the first place," Environmental engineering expert Tiziana Rossetto, was quoted, as saying.
Marine engineers H R Wallingford will build the trail-blazing wave generator at a site in Oxford.
