Musharrafs car repair cost Pak exchequer Rs.8.7 million

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf may have spent the last eight years cracking down on the corrupt practices of previous civilian governments, but this did not stop him from having his official Mercedes Benz repaired for a colossal 8.7 million rupees in March 2005.

Islamabad, July 2 : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf may have spent the last eight years cracking down on the corrupt practices of previous civilian governments, but this did not stop him from having his official Mercedes Benz repaired for a colossal 8.7 million rupees in March 2005.

The Daily Times has learnt that a file for the expenditure on the repair and maintenance of the car has not been provided for audit to the Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP), despite repeated requests.

According to the audit report for 2005-06, the audit department was still waiting for details of the expenditures incurred on the car's maintenance.

In its reply, the President's Secretariat said the vehicle was a "protected one" and some parts needed to be replaced. It said spare parts for the car were imported from Germany and the funds were spent after approval from the "competent" authority.

On April 26, 2006, the AGP was informed that the matter was under active consideration of "executive authorities" of the PM Secretariat.
