US endorses Musharrafs policies and actions

The United States has endorsed the policies and actions of President Pervez Musharraf, and assured him of their continued support for his fight against extremism while steering Pakistan towards democracy.

Washington, July 18 : The United States has endorsed the policies and actions of President Pervez Musharraf, and assured him of their continued support for his fight against extremism while steering Pakistan towards democracy.

Richard Boucher, Assistant Secretary Of State for Central and South Asian Affairs, gave this assurance to Pakistan, saying the US views Musharraf as the leader best equipped to fight extremism and support Washington's policies in the region.

According to the Daily Times, Boucher expressed understanding of the North Waziristan agreement, and accused local leaders of violating the three agreed conditions.

Commenting on the army action on the Lal Masjid, he said the storming of the mosque showed the Pakistan Government's resolve.

Asked if what Musharraf had done was "too little too late" and whether he can go it alone, Boucher replied that while Musharraf is capable of "doing it alone", he will "have our support".

Meanwhile, US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said, "President Musharraf is serious about fighting violent extremism and terror. He is as much threatened by terror and violence, as we are."

"President Musharraf no more wants to see the tribal areas turned into a sanctuary and safe haven for the Taliban or the al Qaeda or other violent extremists than we do. So we are going to continue to support him in his efforts," he added.
