NGO wants Chowk named after Bhagat Singh in Lahore

In a letter to the District Coordination Officer (DCO), the institute director Saeeda Diep said Bhagat Singh was a revolutionary freedom fighter who launched the struggle against the imperialist powers in this region, reported The News.

The centennial birth anniversary of the freedom fighter was being marked across the globe, especially in the subcontinent, and the Pakistan government is celebrating this year with the same zeal, the letter added.

Punjab Governor Lt Gen (retd) Khalid Maqbool had also announced to build a monument to honour the struggle of Bhagat Singh in his village near Jaranwala, Dayal Singh Cultural Forum Director Dr Zafar Ali Cheema was quoted, as saying.

Cheema further said that Pakistan's founder Qaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah delivered a thorough speech in defence of Bhagat Singh in the British Assembly in 1930.

It was Maulana Zaffar Ali Khan, the famous Urdu journalist in pre-partition India, who for the first time, floated the title of "Shaheed" for Bhagat Singh, he said.
