Emergency will be lifted on Dec 15, says Pak Attorney General

The Pakistan government will lift the emergency on December 15 as against the previous date of December 16, which was announced by President Pervez Musharraf, Attorney General Malik Muhammd Qayum said today.

Islamabad, Dec 7 : The Pakistan government will lift the emergency on December 15 as against the previous date of December 16, which was announced by President Pervez Musharraf, Attorney General Malik Muhammd Qayum said today.

"The state of emergency and PCO will be lifted on December 15 and the Constitution will be restored to pre-November 3 position," The News quoted Qayum as telling Geo News.

Responding to a query, he said that one or two amendments would be made in the Constitution, under a Presidential Order. These amendments provide legal cover to the steps taken from November 3 onwards, including imposition PCO and a state of emergency, he added.

He went on to say that the restoration of the Constitution would also restore the basic rights.

Qayum said the induction of judges in Supreme Court would made in one week, adding that these judges would be selected from all the four provinces.

"No judge has been placed under house arrest," Qayum replied to a query.

He added that such rumours were circulating only in the media, and said that some lawyers have been taken into custody.
