It seems like Australians are quite clumsy when it comes to looking after their mobile phones, for a new survey has found that dropping their mobile in the toilet is one of the most common ways with which they destroy them.

Wellington, Dec 5 : It seems like Australians are quite clumsy when it comes to looking after their mobile phones, for a new survey has found that dropping their mobile in the toilet is one of the most common ways with which they destroy them.

According to the survey of Telstra customer service staff, driving off with the handset left on the car roof is the most common excuse for a damaged mobile.

Second excuse on the list is damaging the mobile with water, which includes dropping it in the toilet and using the phone in the rain.

Other to reasons include sitting on the phone, dropping it on the footpath and throwing it to a friend or on a hard surface.

Telstra spokesman, Peter Taylor, said customers are finding creative ways to damage their mobile phones.

"Research shows that mobile phones, along with keys and wallets, are one of the items that Australians typically won't leave home without, so it's little wonder that customers are finding new ways to accidentally damage their handsets in a variety of settings," Stuff.co.nz quoted Taylor, as saying.

Taylor said that in summers a lot people jump into pools or walk into the surf while their phone is in their pocket.

In the survey, some have reported damaging their phone by accidentally running over it with a ride-on mower, leaving it on a windowsill or car dash in direct sunlight and using it while in the shower with the speakerphone activated.

"We've even heard from a customer who retrieved their Next G handset after losing it when back burning a sugar cane field. Incredibly the handset still worked, even though it was a little scorched and melted in places," Taylor said.

Even the old "my dog ate it" excuse is getting a run.

"The popularity of leather cases for mobile phones has seen a surprisingly high number of reports of phones being gnawed by the family pooch," Taylor said.
