London, Dec 30 : In a drive against under-age boozing, British cops have confiscated 6,500 pints of alcohol from youngsters who drink in public places.

The officers impounded 3,700 litres of beer, wine, cider, spirits and alcopops from the teenagers. ome Office Minister Vernon Coaker said that they would not tolerate under-age drinking at public places.

"The campaign was designed to bring to bear the full range of police powers to tackle the harm caused to communities by underage drinking. It will not be the last," the Mirror quoted Coaker, as saying.

"Quite simply we will not tolerate drinking in public by under-18s or anyone else where it leads to antisocial and intimidating behaviour," he added.

The campaign, which ran from October 8 to November 5, involved 21 forces across England and Wales that hit the under-age boozing spots.

Coaker also said that the enforcement of underage sales law has hardened dramatically in recent years.

"Many alcohol retailers have raised their game and now routinely apply 'Challenge 21' criteria," he said.

"Significant work has been done on the issue of underage sales. This campaign sought to use the tactic of confiscation to help prevent drink-fuelled crime and anti-social behaviour that we witness up and down the country," added Chris Allison, Metropolitan Police deputy assistant commissioner.
