The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has said that the general elections should be postponed in the wake of Benazir Bhuttos assassination.
Lahore, Dec 29 : The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has said that the general elections should be postponed in the wake of Benazir Bhutto's assassination.
Describing Bhutto's killing as "the darkest hour in Pakistan's history," HRCP chairperson Hina Jilani said "The elections are inevitable for moving towards democracy, but this is the time for politicians to unite and give direction to the country before the establishment takes up the task."
The Daily Times further quoted Jilani, as questioning the Government on Benazir's assassination, by asking questions like, "how does the government manage to provide foolproof security for President Musharraf, Shaukat Aziz, and Aftab Ahmed Sherpao, which helps them survive such attacks? How come Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi is at all safe from these attacks despite numerous death threats?"
Commenting on the future of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), she said that though Benazir has been killed, the PPP has not. The PPP can survive and become a greater party than it is even after this tragedy.
