Sales of video games in the UK have hit an all time high, with game buffs spending a record-breaking 1.52 billion pounds on titles this year.

London, Dec 27: Sales of video games in the UK have hit an all time high, with game buffs spending a record-breaking 1.52 billion pounds on titles this year.

The sales have gone up by 25 per cent since last year, with more than 78 million titles sold in 2007.

UK gamers had also set another record last week by purchasing games worth more than 87.9m pounds.

Paul Jackson, director general of industry body Elspa has claimed that the games have truly reached a mass-market level.

"Video gaming is enjoyed by everyone, young and old, male and female," BBC quoted him as saying.

Games like Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 are increasingly popular among the UK gamers and have also won many awards.

The popularity of gaming machines like the Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 also boosted sales of console games by 33 pct, with more than 11 million consoles being sold in the third quarter.

They now account for 79 percent of all software sales.
