Gillettes mens razor bags useless packaging award!

The mens razor, which provides the clean look, has been named as the worst offender for environmentally damaging packaging.

Melbourne, Dec 13 : The men's razor, which provides the 'clean' look, has been named as the worst offender for environmentally damaging packaging.

The Gillette Fusion razor, encased in plastic, cardboard and paper, made by Proctor and Gamble, won the Environment Victoria's Golden 'DUMP' award for its 'gratuitous use of packaging', and also for 'excessive use of material'.

The purpose of the annual DUMP (Dangerous and Useless Materials in Packaging) awards is to expose the seven worst types of environmentally damaging packaging being sold on supermarket shelves.

Environment Victoria said that the award judges found the razor's packaging encasing goods in far more packaging than required to protect, transport and market them.

The 'Likely to be Littered Award' went to the 'Heinz Little Kids Mini Meals', because of the multiple types of plastic they contained, including a plastic eating utensil.

And 'Woolworths Apple Snacks' won the 'Going Backwards Award' for its 'ludicrous packaging 'innovation' that turns an apple into a grossly over-packaged fast food'.

Environment Victoria Zero Waste manager Mark Doggett said these products made the environment pay dearly for excessive packaging.

The list of winners is:

* Golden DUMP Award: Gillette Fusion razor (Proctor and Gamble)

* Excessive Use of Material: Gillette Fusion razor (Proctor and Gamble)

* Poorly Designed for Recycling: Equal Cafe Sticks 60g (Merisant Manufacturing Australia)

* Going Backwards: Woolworths Apple Snacks (Woolworths Australia)

* Poorly Labelled for Waste Management: Woolworths Homebrand Mousse (Woolworths Australia) Likely to be Littered: Heinz Little Kids Mini Meals (Heinz Australia)

* Judges' Special Mention: Nescafe Short Black (Nescafe)
