Islamabad, Aug 8 : The Pakistan Supreme Court would stop President Pervez Musharraf from taking any action that will prevent his own ouster from the system, a local daily has claimed.
"The Damocles' sword of the Supreme Court hangs on every action that President Musharraf might want to take to prevent his own ouster from the system," the Daily Times said.
The newspaper further says that though Musharraf has said that he would not impose emergency in the country, but PML chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has repeatedly said that an Emergency continues to be an "option".
Analysing this message, the paper says the message is to the "activated" Supreme Court and is telling it where the red line is drawn as far as its activism is concerned.
"It is also a message to the opposition that the Government can suspend the operation of the Constitution and extend the life of the present assemblies for another year if the opposition leans on the Supreme Court too much to take its political chestnuts out of the fire," it said.
The newspaper says that former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and MMA chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman have taken the signals seriously and have not succumbed to knee-jerk defiance.
Following a petition filed by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's petion in the SC seeking his return, Musharraf will have to find a way to prevent the Sharifs from taking off from an airport outside Pakistan.
But, this would be difficult so Musharraf can put them on another plane to Saudi Arabia if and when they land in Pakistan, which may be problematic if there is a court order stopping them from doing so, the paper added.
