Musharrafs re-election likely on Sept 15

The ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Quami) has reportedly fixed September 15 as the date for President Pervez Musharrafs re-election from the existing assemblies.

Karachi, Aug 6 : The ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Quami) has reportedly fixed September 15 as the date for President Pervez Musharraf's re-election from the existing assemblies.

According to the Dawn, Musharraf yesterday briefed his staunch ally, the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), on the government's planned move towards his re-election.

Some of the participants at the meeting were quoted as saying, that Musharraf told the MQM delegation that no article or clause of the Constitution bars his re-election as President.

"I have absolute legal and Constitutional justification for contesting the presidential election," he said.

Musharraf did not indicate whether he would shed his uniform ahead his re-election, and also avoided talking about his negotiations with former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Musharraf told the MQM delegation that he would launch a mass contact drive from September 13 informing people about the threats of extremism and Talibanisation.

The MQM's coordination committee deputy convener Dr Farooq Sattar, Federal Minister for Shipping and Ports Babar Ghauri, Sindh Minister for Local Government Mohammad Hussain and Hyderabad Nazim Kanwar Naveed were among those who met Musharraf.
