London, Aug.31 : Policemen at Britain's Gatwick Airport had to buy their colleagues doughnuts as punishment for leaving their guns unattended, a tribunal here was told recently.
According to The Sun, one of the policemen left his sub-machine gun in the canteen and allegedly had to buy the whole team a cake as penalty for more serious rule breaches.
Thirty-eight-year-old Barbara Lynford, a police constable who claimed that sexist male officers had hounded her out of her job, is suing the Sussex police force. Former police constable Toby Gough told a Brighton industrial tribunal that officers faked patrol reports, slept on the job and left guns lying around. He branded the breaks some of them took as "scandalous", claiming they spent more time in the canteen than on patrol.
Asked why he did not report his colleagues, he said: "I had a mortgage to pay."
The hearing continues.
