Melbourne, Aug 29 : It looks like Australians are self-proclaimed caffeine addicts, for a new survey has revealed that one-quarter of the country's population cannot function without the beverage.
In the survey conducted by Home Beautiful magazine, 26 pct of the Oz population has admitted that they are addicted to caffeine.
While 12 pct claimed that they drank four or more cups of coffee everyday, 14 pct said that they have three cups on a daily basis.
"Coffee is the life blood of Australians, it's what makes us get out of bed in the morning," News.com.au quoted Home Beautiful magazine editor Wendy Moore, as saying.
"This survey proves how integral coffee is to everyday life - without it, Australia could come to a standstill," Moore added.
Among other revelations in the survey, it was also found that 25 pct of the Down Under population does not drink coffee or prefer tea and juice.
In the survey that has about 552 respondents, 27 per cent have about two cups of coffee a day only to unwind.
Twenty-four pct said they have only one cup a day only when they meet up with friends.
According to statistics form the Australian Coffee Traders Association, Australian coffee drinkers devour 2.4kg each a year, as compared to just 500g in 1957.
