Settlements dating back 40000 years discovered in Irans Bushehr province

Iranian archaeologists have traced evidence of human settlement dating back from the Palaeolithic epoch to Middle Stone Age (40,000-10,000 years ago) around the city of Jam-o Riz in Irans Bushehr province.

Tehran, Aug 27 : Iranian archaeologists have traced evidence of human settlement dating back from the Palaeolithic epoch to Middle Stone Age (40,000-10,000 years ago) around the city of Jam-o Riz in Iran's Bushehr province.

"Archaeological excavations in Jam-o Riz city in southern and northern slides of midst mountain plain resulted in discovering evidence belonging to Palaeolithic, and Middle Stone Age periods," said Abdolreza Dashtizadeh, head of archaeology team in Jam-o Riz.

He said six of the 16 prehistoric sites discovered during these excavations, enjoy a high archaeological potential and need to be studied in greater detail.

He said the team also conducted some anthropological researches in the area, which led them to conclude that the local people of this area used the stone instruments until 40 years ago.

"These researches show that the local people used a kind of flint stone, which is called Bardtash in local language, and means fire stone. It is used for making razors blades for hunting animals," Dashtizadeh said, pointing out previous studies conducted in this regard in the area.

"Before starting archaeological excavations, some geological and morphological studies were conducted in the whole area and existence of Palaeolithic evidence was already approved in the area," he said.

Dashtizadeh said the discovered prehistoric relics have now been transferred to the Palaeolithic Research Department of Iran's National Museum where Fereydoon Biglari, the director of the department, has examined them.

The City of Jam is the ninth city of Iranian southwestern province of Bushehr. It is limited to Firuzabad and Dashti from the north, to Kangan city from the south, to Mehr city of Fars province from the east, and Deir and Kangan cities from the west.

Historical and geographical evidence show the existence of Jam city from very ancient times.
