Next two weeks critical for Pakistan: Rehman

Muttahhida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) Secretary-General Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that the next couple of weeks are critical for Pakistan politics as the military government might take extreme steps.

Islamabad, Aug 25 : Muttahhida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) Secretary-General Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that the next couple of weeks are critical for Pakistan politics as the military government might take extreme steps.

He said that the imposition of emergency was an unpopular act and the Musharraf regime should take into consideration public sentiments, Supreme Court's recent decisions and new political developments before taking such a step.

"They (military rulers) should recognise ground realities and should not resort to extreme steps," the Daily Times quoted Rehman, as saying.

Commenting on Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sher Afgan Naizi remarks against the judiciary, he said, "Let us see if it (Niazi's statement) becomes the voice of the government."

Rehman said that the exile of Nawaz Sharif was illegal and the SC decision in his favour amounted to the defeat of "dictatorial acts" and a "ray of hope" for people.

He said the government's decision to reopen old cases against Sharif could delay his return and that Saudi Arabian reaction to his return was still unknown.

The MMA Government would not stop Sharif if his plane landed in Peshawar, Rehman said, adding the provincial government could control matters only outside the airport.
