Benazir thumbs nose at fundamentalists, meets Israeli envoy

Benazir Bhutto appears determined to endear herself to Western supporters and moderates in Pakistan, and is not too enamoured by her Islamist opponents.

Lahore, Aug.24 : Benazir Bhutto appears determined to endear herself to Western supporters and moderates in Pakistan, and is not too enamoured by her Islamist opponents.

This week, the former Pakistan prime minister had a three-hour long private dinner meeting with Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, Dan Gillerman at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York.

Sources privy to the meeting told The Sun that Bhutto initiated the meeting with Gillerman as she attempts to return to power in her homeland. She also met the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Zalmay Khalilzad.

Bhutto is seen in Israel as a likely future leader, but Israelis and Pakistanis are well aware of the political sensitivities involved in her meeting with Gillerman.
