US wouldnt support another military govt in Pak: Kux

The US would not support another military government in Pakistan, unless the Musharraf regime quickly sets a date for new elections, said Dennis Kux, author of two acclaimed books on US relations with Pakistan and India.

Washington, Aug 22 : The US would not support another military government in Pakistan, unless the Musharraf regime quickly sets a date for new elections, said Dennis Kux, author of two acclaimed books on US relations with Pakistan and India.

Kux said it is his feeling that "Musharraf's compass has lost its bearing and is flying around in all directions."

The Daily Times quoted Kux as saying "on Monday he (Musharraf) says X, Tuesday the opposite and Wednesday something else. Given the legal constraints on what Musharraf's wants to do because of the Supreme Court fiasco and the shift in public attitudes, he has no good choices from his perspective."

Commenting on martial law, Kux said that the Pakistani military leader, "If picks short-term martial law to get re-elected and keep the uniform on, he is risking almost certain disaster."

The likely response would be an explosion in the streets, 'hartals', etc as civil society and the [political] parties join hands, he added.

His government would then collapse and the question would then be whether the military chiefs follow the Constitution, making Soomro the acting President, or 'appoint' another general. Kux said.

Hopefully, if it comes to this, the US would urge following the Constitution with fresh elections and then a new government. I do not think a military government will last unless they quickly set a date for new elections, he added.
