Musharraf would seek re-election in accordance with the Constitution: Pak envoy

President Pervez Musharraf would seek re-election in accordance with the countrys Constitution, by the elected national and provincial assemblies, Pakistans Ambassador to the US, Munir Akram, has said.

New York, Aug 22 : President Pervez Musharraf would seek re-election in accordance with the country's Constitution, by the elected national and provincial assemblies, Pakistan's Ambassador to the US, Munir Akram, has said.

"The president ... is neither clinging to power, nor seeking more than he has already," he said while responding to last week's New York Times editorial "High-Maintenance Musharraf".

Akram said the editorial reflected "continued misunderstanding of Pakistan's realities."

Musharraf's re-election would ensure the continuity and unity of policy required to counter terrorism and extremism, and maintain Pakistan's dynamic economic performance, the Daily Times quoted Akram, as saying.

"Musharraf is also committed to holding free and fair general elections and allow the results to determine the composition of the new government," he added.

Akram said that democracy requires all parties to recognise the primacy of Pakistan's national interests and avoid actions that could destabilise the country and compromise these vital interests.
